I want to remember your face so that when I meet you in heaven, I can recognize you and thank you once again.”
This sentence was the moment in Ratan Tata’s life, which explained the meaning of true happiness to him.
When a radio presenter asked Indian billionaire Mr. Ratan Tata in a telephone interview, “Sir, when did you get the most happiness in life?” then he gave a touching answer.
Searching for happiness in four stages of life Ratan Tata said, “I went through four stages in life and finally I understood the meaning of true happiness.
“The first stage was to accumulate wealth and resources. During this, I did not get the happiness that I expected.
Then came the second stage, when I started collecting valuables and clothes. But I soon realized that the effect of this happiness is also temporary, because the shine of these things does not last long.
The third stage came when I achieved big projects. At that time I had 95% of the diesel supply in India and Africa, and I was the owner of the largest steel factory in India and Asia. Then Also, I did not get the happiness I had imagined.
The Fourth and Decisive Step
Then came the fourth step, which changed the course of my life. A friend of mine asked me to buy wheelchairs for handicapped children. There were about 200 children. I immediately bought wheelchairs on my friend’s request. But my friend insisted that I go with him and personally present them to the children.
I gave the wheelchairs to the children with my own hands and the sparkle of joy I saw in their eyes brought a new feeling to my life. Watching those children move around in wheelchairs and having fun was like being at a picnic spot and enjoying a great gift.
Life-Changing Moment
When I was getting ready to go back, a child grabbed my leg. I tried to gently release my leg, but he held it even tighter. Then I bent down and asked him, “Do you need anything else?”
The child’s reply was life-changing. He said, “I want to remember your face so that when I meet you in heaven, I can recognize you and thank you once again.”
The meaning of true happiness.
This one sentence not only shook Ratan Tata, but completely changed his outlook towards life. This experience made him understand that true happiness lies in serving others, not in material possessions.
If we work in life thinking that when we leave this world, what will we be remembered for, will our life be so important to someone that he wants to see us again? Then the way we all live our lives will change. It is not necessary that we all will become Ratan Tata, but when we say Tata to this world, the world around you will feel that a gem has gone.
Tata…Ratan of India, come again to make a country better
