Decoding D-Street’s Historic ₹500 Lakh Crore Milestone: Wealth Creation Amidst Lagging Indices

By | November 7, 2026 4:21 pm

Dalal Street has officially crossed a monumental threshold, entering the ₹500-lakh crore club. On Thursday, the combined market capitalization of all BSE-listed companies reached approximately ₹502 lakh crore, or $5.31 trillion. However, a fascinating structural divergence underscores this achievement: this historic wealth creation is happening even as benchmark indices remain noticeably below their all-time highs.

The Accelerated Pace of Wealth Creation

The speed of expansion on Dalal Street has accelerated dramatically in recent years. Looking at the historical timeline reveals a stark compression in the time required to add each ₹100 lakh crore:

  • ₹100 lakh crore: Reached on March 12, 2014.

  • ₹200 lakh crore: Reached on February 4, 2021.

  • ₹300 lakh crore: Reached on July 6, 2023, taking just 586 sessions from the previous milestone.

  • ₹400 lakh crore: Reached on April 8, 2024, in a mere 181 sessions.

  • ₹500 lakh crore: Reached in late 2024, taking 622 trading sessions to bridge the final gap.

What is Driving the Expansion?

If the primary indices aren’t breaking new highs, what is inflating the total market capitalization? The data points to three core drivers:

  • The IPO Engine: A steady stream of initial public offerings (IPOs) has significantly expanded the overall size of the market. In 2024, 94 companies made their mainboard debut, adding approximately ₹12 lakh crore to the total market cap on their listing days. Ankur Punj, MD at Equirus Wealth, notes, “The larger number of IPOs has added to the overall mcap. At the same time, several companies outside the main indices have participated in the rally, helping total mcap reach a record even as major indices remain below their peaks.”

  • Plunging Crude Oil: Macroeconomic pressures have eased, led by a sharp decline of more than 19% in crude oil prices over the past three sessions. With Dubai Crude dropping to $93.22, concerns over inflation, India’s import bill, and the stability of the rupee have significantly eased.

  • Strong Institutional Inflows: Robust foreign portfolio investor (FPI) buying has provided critical liquidity. Over the past 12 sessions, FPIs have injected net inflows of over $3.4 billion, lifting overall investor sentiment amidst positive global cues.

The Technical Divergence: Market Cap vs. Index Peaks

While the broader market size expands, key indices reveal a different story of lagging momentum. The benchmark Sensex is still trading 7.6% below its record peak of 85,836, recorded on September 26, 2024. This behavior is mirrored across broader market segments:

  • The BSE MidCap 150 remains 5.3% below its record high of 17,373.

  • The BSE SmallCap 250 is currently 8.4% below its peak of 7,514, recorded on September 23, 2024.

Despite trailing their peaks, domestic benchmarks showed strong daily performance on the day of the milestone, with the BSE Sensex closing at 79,310 (up 2.60%) and the Nifty 50 at 24,537 (up 2.40%). Both have gained more than 8.1% in each of the past six consecutive sessions.

Globally, the picture was mixed: Hong Kong’s HSI gained 3.67%, while South Korea’s Kospi dropped 5.28% and Japan’s Nikkei fell 1.79%. Notably, MSCI India outpaced the broader MSCI World index, gaining 2.28% compared to the World index’s modest 0.14% gain.

Navigating the Market Ahead

The momentum in the near term heavily depends on crude prices remaining stable at these lower levels and FPI inflows sustaining their current pace. However, market experts advise caution moving forward.

Ravi Singh, chief research officer at Master Capital Services, warns, “Investors should remain cautious as geopolitical developments, crude price volatility and profit booking after the sharp rally could limit further upside.” Traders must prioritize strict risk management and capital preservation as the market digests this historic valuation milestone alongside lingering global uncertainties.
